Senior Portfolio Protocol
There are eight potential components of an acceptable IC CAE Senior Portfolio.
It is necessary to complete and submit a total of five components for a Portfolio to be eligible for approval. Component numbers 1, 4 and 8 are required of all students, and the other two components are to be chosen by the Scholar in collaboration with her IC Advisor.
Components
Research Paper in Major Field
or upper level course related to intelligence studies, such as International Affairs or another appropriate discipline, chosen in consultation with your IC advisor. If you have received comments on the original paper, your portfolio should include both the original paper and a revision of your paper that reflects your careful consideration of the professor's comments.
Report on Study Abroad Program
- Outline the program and its components.
- Reflect on what you found most striking and/or intriguing about the host country's culture, society, economy and/or politics, and report on the conclusions you have drawn from your observations. You might also comment on what you have learned about the host country's relationship with the International community.
- Discuss the benefit of immersion language classes, if applicable.
- Explain how exposure to the host country's society and customs and the chance to get to know people from different backgrounds and cultures has affected your world-view.
- Describe how your trip affected your thinking about your personal goals and the possibility of a career in the intelligence community.
Written and Oral Briefings Course
Submission of transcript or videotaped briefing produced in the Written and Oral Briefings course (ICAE 430/COM 430).
Representative Assignment
from Any Course Approved for Credit Towards the IC CAE Certificate, chosen in consultation with your IC advisor.
Presentation
Reflection on Scholar's participation in or presentation at any of the following:
- Senior Advisory Board Meeting
- Trinity's Academic Colloquium
- Student forum
- IC Seminar
- Experience at Spy Camp
This reflection should indicate the date and location of the event, describe the purpose of the presentation, summarize the main points or arguments made, and assess the experience of representing the IC scholars in a larger forum.
Internship or Work Study
If the Scholar has completed a for-credit internship with an Intelligence Agency or with an associated non-governmental agency, she can submit her summative assessment of the internship for this portfolio. Students who have completed a non-credit internship should write a 6-8 page paper in which they report on the relationship between what they have learned through their direct experience of the internship and their formal course work.
Documentation of Language Studies
Students who have undertaken significant work in a second language should indicate the courses taken or immersion programs completed, and the grades received. They should also evaluate the way in which these experiences have contributed to their understanding of another culture or society and the ways in which such studies might contribute to their work as IC CAE Scholars.
Synthesizing Essay
All students must write a 4-5 page essay in which they integrate the various components of their IC portfolio, highlighting the connections among their various experiences and courses, and reflecting on what they have learned as IC scholars.
