Commencement Instructions

College of Arts & Sciences
Congratulations to Seniors in the College of Arts and Sciences! This page provides specific instructions to assist you with planning and attendance during the various events for the 2008 Commencement.
You are responsible to read and follow all Commencement directions.
1. Schedule
Please see the Master Schedule of Events for Commencement 2008. You are welcome to participate in all of these events.
2. Checklist
Please see the Commencement Checklist which is your guide to essential tasks you must fulfill in order to graduate.
3. Announcements
You may pick up graduation announcements at the Office of the Dean of Student Services on or after April 14.
4. Requirements
You are responsible to meet with your academic advisor to be sure that you have fulfilled all of your requirements for graduation. You and your advisor should complete the Graduation Verification Checklist to be sure you have met all requirements.
5. Short Credits
Undergraduate students who are within six credits of the 128 credits required for the Baccalaureate Degree may wear the black academic robe and mortarboard, but not the hood that signifies degree completion. These students may march in the academic procession. However, their names are not in the program nor are these names called during the graduation ceremony. No exceptions.
6. Payments
By April 30 Students must settle all financial accounts, including student loan counseling as well as the master account balances, to Trinity’s satisfaction in order to participate in the Commencement ceremony. Students with outstanding balances after April 30 will NOT be listed in the program nor may they participate in the ceremony.
7. Regalia
Regalia includes the mortarboard (cap) and black undergraduate gown, as well as the academic hood that signifies degree completion. The satin lining of the hood reflects Trinity’s school colors, purple and gold; the outer velvet lining signifies the type of degree the student receives. Students receiving B.A. degrees receive hoods that have white velvet, students receiving B.S. degrees receive hoods that have yellow velvet. Additionally, undergraduate students in both SPS and CAS purchase the traditional stock from the Dean of Student Services for $20.
NO items (medals, sashes, cords, decorations, etc.) may appear on any part of the regalia other than those approved by Trinity.
Academic regalia will be available for purchase at the Trinity Bookstore according to the schedule that the bookstore will post.
8. Rehearsal
You must attend graduation rehearsal at 6 pm on Thursday, May 15, if you intend to participate in Commencement. Following the rehearsal, a barbecue dinner for graduating students only will be available in Alumnae Hall.
Please do not bring children to Rehearsal or the barbeque. Guests are not permitted to attend Rehearsal or the barbeque.
If for some reason you cannot attend Rehearsal, you must contact the Dean of Students at 202-884-9600 or commencement@trinitydc.edu
If you do not notify Dean Bowie of your inability to attend Rehearsal, we will assume that you are not participating in Commencement and we will drop your name from the list.
9. Senior Luncheon
A longstanding Trinity Tradition, the senior luncheon is for undergraduate seniors in CAS and SPS to enjoy their final moments together. This luncheon takes place on Friday, May 16 at 12:30 pm in Alumnae Hall. Seniors traditionally dress nicely for this elegant occasion, announce their Class Gift to Trinity, and toast their success. This is also the occasion when we announce prizes and awards to the senior class.
10. Baccalaureate Mass
Also a longstanding Trinity Tradition, the Baccalaureate Mass is a spiritual moment that begins the final series of events leading to graduation. The Mass takes place on Saturday, May 17 at 5 pm.
4:30 pm before Mass: Seniors participating in the Baccalaureate Mass should bring their cap & gown to O’Connor Auditorium for robing and the procession to Mass.
The traditional President’s Reception takes place immediately
following the Baccalaureate Mass.
11. Commencement
Commencement is on Sunday, May 18 at 11 am.
9 am before Commencement: CAS seniors report to Social Hall with your full regalia, including cap and gown, stock and hood. Please dress appropriately; you should wear black shoes. NO items (medals, sashes, cords, decorations, etc.) may appear on any part of the regalia other than those approved by Trinity.
During the hour before Commencement, your class will have a group photo taken on the front steps.
12. Guests
Your families and friends are welcome to attend these events:
- Baccalaureate Mass (arrive by 4:30)
- President’s Reception
- Commencement (with limitations if it rains)
(guests should arrive by 10 am)
While we are happy to welcome all guests, we ask everyone to
be courteous and considerate of others in the number of guests and their conduct during these ceremonies. We ask your cooperation in maintaining a reasonable guest group size for these events, with “reasonable guest group size” being no more than 20. All guests should be appropriately dressed and refrain from loud celebrations during the ceremony.
In the event of rain, the commencement ceremony will be indoors and tickets will be required for guest admission to the ceremony. Each graduate will receive six tickets for the rain ceremony. No exceptions are possible to this limitation. View the complete rain plan.
School of Professional Studies

You are responsible to meet with your academic advisor to be sure that you have fulfilled all of your requirements for graduation. Students who do not meet ALL requirements cannot participate in the graduation ceremony.
5. Payments
By April 30 Students must settle all financial accounts, including student loan counseling as well as the master account balances, to Trinity’s satisfaction in order to participate in the Commencement ceremony. Students with outstanding balances after April 30 will NOT be listed in the program nor may they participate in the ceremony.
6. Regalia
Regalia includes the mortarboard (cap) and black master’s gown, as well as the academic hood that signifies degree completion. The satin lining of the hood reflects Trinity’s school colors, purple and gold; the outer velvet lining signifies the type of degree the student receives. Master’s hoods in EDU include white velvet for the M.A. (Counseling) and M.A.T.(Special Education, Elementary, Secondary, Early Childhood and TESOL receiving the MAT), goldenrod (dark yellow) velvet for the M.S.A. degree (Educational Leadership) and light blue velvet for the M.Ed. (Reading, DDSJ and TESOL receiving the M.Ed.)
